Prevention of MCA accidents
Measures for facilities
Precautions for facilities (including the materials)
1)Storage tank
Storage tank for flakes
- SUS316, SUS316L, PVC, PP-FRP, or a tank glass lining or titanium lining
- Stainless steel container can corrode with long-term storage.
Storage tank for aqueous solution
- For SUS316L tank
- *Heavily corrodes at temperatures exceeding 40Ž.
- *For long-term storage, discoloration of the material can occur due to iron.
- *Periodically inspect the interior and check for presence of any abnormality (such as pitting corrosion and SCC).
2)Storage tank for aqueous solution
- For PVC-FRP tank
- *To prevent unreasonable load on pipework, appropriate maintenance should be performed on valves which are directly installed on the tank.
- *Use flexible hoses for the connections of pipework to the tank.
- *Control the temperature so that it does not reach or exceed the specified temperature of 40Ž.
- *Gently open and shut the valves.
- *A full face gasket is used for the first flange. Take full precautions for tightening torque.
- *Pathways should be secured so that people never get on the connecting pipework.
- *Periodically inspect the interior and check for presence of any abnormality.
3)Facilities around the tank
- The floor of the facilities handling MCA must be acid resistant.
- A system must be established so that drainage water from the facilities handling MCA does not mix into public water systems.
- Intake and outtake pipes
- *Minimize the residual solution after the end of the operation through the structural design.
- *Make considerations so that the interior is a washable interior and the solution is dispensable.
- *Prevent air pockets
- *For aqueous solution, install thermal insulation and/or heating device to prevent freezing.
Measures when leakage and fire occur
Leakage
Measures when MCA leakage occurs
- Always wear protective equipment and ensure that the product does not directly contact the eyes and skin.
Urgently contact the manufacturer and obtain instructions.
(MCA flake products, SMCA)
Use of water is prohibited. Scatter sodium bicarbonate and use a dry clean-up method. Avoid the generated dust.
Place the mixture of recovered flakes and sodium bicarbonate in an airtight polyethylene or polypropylene container.
(Aqueous solution)
Prevent emptying the solution into waters including rivers.
Neutralize the solution with sodium bicarbonate to pH`7.
(It is important to confirm the pH with tests such as with litmus paper, and then dispose or recover.)
Neutralizing agent at recovery | Sodium bicarbonate, sodium carbonate, calcium hydroxide, and magnesium lime |

Fire
Measures when fire occurs
- For extinguishing fire, use alcohol resistant foam, carbon dioxide gas, and powder-type fire extinguishing media.
Do not use water for fire extinguishing. - If fire or explosion occurs, wear respiratory protective equipment and acid-resistant clothes to avoid contact with skin and eyes.
Extinguish fire from upwind. (Although this product does not flash or ignite easily, it produces hazardous gas and irritating gas when it burns.) - If water spraying is performed to prevent the spread of fire, avoid spraying water on the product. After the fire is extinguished, do not discharge cooling water on the product.
Prevention of secondary damage from aqueous solution
Do not use Kevlar fire-fighting gloves because water penetrates the gloves.
